What Is The Most Cost-Effective Roof?

newly installed home roofA roof is a long-term and important purchase, and it is helpful to determine which roof material is the most cost-effective, both initially and long-term, before making your final purchasing decision for your home. The following is everything you need to know about choosing the most cost-effective roof for your home.

What Factors Affect the Long-Term Cost-Effectiveness of Your Roof?

There are a variety of factors that affect the cost-effectiveness of your roof. When determining cost-effectiveness, we considered the initial costs (materials, installation, etc.) and the long-term benefit of each roof type, which includes how long the roofing material should last when properly installed and the level of maintenance that is required.

Of course, the amount of maintenance and weather elements can also play a role in the durability of your roof long-term and how cost-effective it is initially and over an extended period of time.

What Are the Different Types of Roofs?

The most common types of roof materials are asphalt shingles, metal, wooden shingles, wooden shakes, slate, and plastic polymer; solar glass is less common but is rapidly gaining in popularity as many homeowners desire more energy-efficient homes. The following is a more detailed look at each roofing material.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are made of glass fibers or cellulose fibers. The asphalt is then used to create shingles (sheets) of roofing material that are water-resistant by nature and last for a long time. Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing material due to their convenience and cost. The installation process is relatively less complex, which helps reduce initial costs, and the material is produced in a relatively affordable manner.

Asphalt shingles should last for 20 to 30 years, depending on the quality of the shingles, climate conditions, and how well they are cared for over time. The drawback to this form of roofing material, however, is that they are less durable than alternative solutions and may require more maintenance over time. Nevertheless, the low initial cost and the reliable performance make them an excellent option for most homes.

Metal

construction worker wearing safety harness belt during working on roof structureMetal roofs are an incredibly durable roofing option that typically use zinc, copper, and steel options to create the metal roofing pieces or tiles. The initial cost of installation for metal is typically higher than asphalt shingles, but they last longer on average as well, which offsets the cost long-term. On average, homeowners can expect their metal roof to last for 35 to 50 years with proper care.

Metal roofs are particularly useful and cost-effective for homeowners who live in an area that experiences bad weather throughout the year, such as homes near the coast. (Additionally, the sound of rain on a metal roof is great.) Metal roofs do not require much maintenance long-term and are energy-efficient, acting as a natural insulator for your home.

This means homeowners who choose metal roofs save money on maintenance and energy costs. Overall, they are an excellent cost-effective roofing solution for those who are willing to pay slightly more initially for reduced costs long-term.

Wooden Shingles and Shakes

Wooden shingles are shakes are types of wood roofing that make for a beautiful roofing option. On average, wooden shingles and shakes last between 35 and 50 years when they are cared for properly.

However, the major drawback to wooden shingles and shakes is that they are more at risk of damage by fire or heavy rainstorms than asphalt shingles or metal roofs. With that said, wooden shingles and shakes are usually sprayed with a fire-retardant material and are made to be resistant to water damage.

Slate

Slate is a type of fine-grained rock, and it makes for one of the highest quality roofing options available. Subsequently, slate roofs cost notably more than alternative roof types such as wood shingles and shakes and asphalt shingles. However, slate also lasts significantly longer than alternative options.

On average, homeowners can expect their slate roof to last for 100 to 125 years. Additionally, slate roofs increase the overall value of your home, so much of the initial cost is usually returned in the form of home value.

Plastic Polymer

roof with plastic polymer tilesPlastic polymer is less common than the aforementioned roofing options in this review, but they are an intriguing solution. Most notably, plastic polymer roofs do not require much maintenance long-term and they hold up well in more strenuous climates.

On average, plastic polymer roofs last for 50 years while offering a relatively affordable price. They also look similar to slate roofs but do not require as much long-term maintenance as slate roofs.

How Long Does Vinyl Siding Last?

door exterior of a house with vinyl wood and bricks sidingsVinyl siding should last between 25 and 50 years. In some cases, vinyl siding may last much longer or wear down sooner. There are various factors that can affect the durability of your vinyl, and this review discusses these factors to help provide you with a more precise estimate as to how long your vinyl siding should last.

Vinyl Siding Explained

Vinyl is a type of strong and durable plastic material that is commonly used for residential and commercial siding in the United States. Its popularity is largely due to the combination of aesthetic quality and durability long-term. There are also multiple color and design options for homeowners to consider with vinyl siding as well.

Factors That Affect the Longevity of Vinyl Siding

The longevity of your vinyl siding depends on a variety of factors, including the quality of your vinyl, how well the vinyl siding is maintained, the quality of the vinyl siding installation, and climate conditions. The following is a more detailed look at the durability and life expectancy of vinyl siding.

The Quality of the Vinyl Siding

Perhaps the primary factor in determining the expected lifespan of your vinyl siding is the quality of the siding itself. Not all vinyl is created equal, and some is simply more durable and damage-resistant than others. It is strongly encouraged to spend more initially for higher quality vinyl as this will lead to a return on your investment over time; your siding contractor can help you determine the pros and cons of each vinyl siding brand and choose the most cost-efficient solution for your home.

To be more specific, however, the quality of the vinyl siding largely depends on its degree of thickness; the thicker the siding the longer it is likely to last. Thickness grades can range from .35 millimeters to .55 millimeters (the higher the grade the thicker and more durable the vinyl should be). Thicker vinyl siding usually costs more initially, but it also provides a more attractive appearance, and since it is more durable on average than thin vinyl siding, it usually comes with longer warranty coverage.

How Well the Vinyl Siding Is Maintained

man washing vinyl sidingWhen measuring how long vinyl siding should last, you are essentially asking how long can the siding last before replacement is necessary or is the recommended solution. There are several reasons why vinyl may need early replacement. Notably, siding may need replacement if it becomes damaged or worn down to an extent that it affects the home’s energy efficiency, appearance, and/or safety during bad weather.

With that said, the amount of maintenance that is provided to the siding plays a large role in how long it lasts, and it is easier to repair a small problem or provide preventive service to your vinyl siding rather than wait until larger repairs or replacement is necessary. You can maintain the strength, appearance, and functional capabilities of your vinyl siding by inspecting it for damage once a month and washing it periodically (several times a year or once every time the seasons change).

The Quality of the Vinyl Siding Installation

There is a big difference between professional and DIY vinyl siding installation. Siding installation is often far more complex than it seems, and there are various elements that a professional checks for before they begin vinyl siding installation, such as ensuring there is no underlying water damage that needs addressing.

Additionally, a highly skilled siding contractor is more likely to use higher quality materials, such as corrosion-resistant nails and taping joints. The end result is home siding that looks much better and is expected to last for much longer. Subsequently, it is encouraged to avoid DIY installations and choose a reputable and experienced siding contractor to handle your vinyl siding installation.

Weather Conditions

home siding with bad weather in backgroundOf course, weather conditions can also impact the lifespan of your home’s vinyl siding. Extreme weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy rainfall, and lightning can damage your home’s siding earlier than anticipated.

While the weather is out of your control, you can mitigate the risk of wear and tear to your home’s vinyl siding from weather conditions by ensuring you choose durable and thick vinyl and having the siding professionally installed. This is particularly important if you live in an area that regularly receives bad weather throughout each year, such as homes near the coast or in areas where heavy winds or tornados are a possibility.

How To Measure How Much Siding Your Home Needs

a siding installation that utilizes insulation sheathingThe process of installing siding on a home can often be long and overwhelming. It typically involves setting a timeline and budget, choosing a material, and hiring a contractor. One other essential step in this process involves measuring exactly how much siding your property requires.

It’s critical to take this measurement as accurately as possible the first time to avoid costly mistakes that result in you going over your budget or extending the timeline of the installation. Here is a closer look at this subject.

How To Measure How Much Siding Your Home Needs

By accurately calculating the amount of siding your house needs, you’ll be able to gain a better sense of how much you’ll spend on this project. The first thing to know about siding is that one unit (i.e. “one square”) equals 110 square feet. Measurements for trim, on the other hand, are in linear feet. According to Forbes Advisor, it typically takes 3 or 4 days to install wood siding on a home, and the average cost of this installation normally falls between $600 and $800 for a wall measuring 16 x 18 feet.

If you choose to install wood (e.g. redwood, oak, spruce, cedar, pine, etc.) siding — which is generally less durable, more expensive, and more difficult to maintain than other siding materials such as vinyl — you can take the following six steps:

  • Measure each side of your home’s width and height. You can get the total square footage for each side by calculating the product of these two values.
  • Measure other parts of your property, such as dormers and gables. Any triangle-shaped areas should be calculated by multiplying the height and half of the length of the base.
  • Measure each door and window’s width and height.
  • Add the total square footage for each side and all other areas.
  • Calculate the difference between the amount you computed in the previous step and the square footage of your house’s uncovered areas.
  • Divide this figure by 100 to determine how many squares of siding you need.

You can use online calculators such as this one to confirm your measurements.

Common Siding Measurement Errors

There are many mistakes you can make if you’re new to measuring siding for your home, but you can avoid three in particular by taking the correct precautions:

beautiful home with blue siding

  1. Not ordering enough siding: As crucial as it is to stay under budget for this type of home project, you also want to make sure you don’t underestimate the amount of siding you need. If you do, your installation will take longer. Remember that wood siding is not as susceptible to damage as other materials, so there is generally less risk of waste.
  2. Wrong measurements: As with virtually any other project that involves measuring, it’s always a good idea to measure your home’s total square footage for siding more than once (or to ask someone else, such as an experienced contractor, to confirm your measurements). This can also help you avoid spending more than you need to on siding.
  3. Ignoring additional costs: The total cost of siding installation includes more than just the material itself. You also have to consider the cost of trim, sealant (or caulk), flashing, tools, nails, and labor. Be sure to conduct as much research as possible to learn how much each of these things costs, on average, in your area.

Additional Tips For Measuring Siding

Here are three additional tips that can make the process of measuring siding for your home easier:

  • Divide irregularly-shaped areas into smaller, traditional shapes. When in doubt about how to calculate the area of an irregularly-shaped area of your home’s exterior, use standard shapes like triangles and squares and relatively simple calculations.
  • Add 5-10% extra siding. This will help you factor in mistakes. If you end up with extra siding, you can keep it for a future home project.
  • Perform door and window repairs first. Doors and windows represent essential aspects of your home, so be sure to repair your framework first before moving onto siding. An experienced contractor can help you identify and repair any cracks and warping.

Once you’ve measured your home for siding, the next step is to choose a substrate.

How Does A Metal Roof Installation Work?

man installing metal roofThere are many types of metal roofs, including aluminum, steel, copper, and zinc. Metal roofs have several notable advantages. First, they’re extremely durable: they can withstand the effects of severe weather events such as hurricanes and hailstorms and aren’t particularly noisier than other types of roofs. Metal roofs are also less combustible than other types of roofs such as traditional asphalt shingles or wood shakes, so you don’t have to worry about lightning strikes.

Metal roofs can also last over 50 years and are highly energy-efficient because they can reflect heat from the sun. They can lower cooling costs by between 10 and 25%, according to a study conducted by State Farm Insurance. They also require almost no upkeep as long as they’re properly installed, and they are highly resistant to rot, mildew, and insects.

One of the few notable downsides of metal roofs is their cost. According to the home improvement information website This Old House Ventures, metal roofs cost on average between $7 and $20 per square foot, which is at least two to three times more costly than other materials such as asphalt. (This figure also varies based on the specific type of metal chosen.) Here is a closer look at how a metal roof installation works.

How Does A Metal Roof Installation Work?

A typical metal roof installation consists of the following steps:

1. Removing Your Previous Roof

Before doing anything else, your old roof needs to come off, and a full removal is often recommended. Even though you can technically install embossed metal panels over outdated asphalt shingles, removing your roof makes the inspection (and replacement, if necessary) of the flashing and sheathing significantly easier. Consequently, there is a lower chance of leaks occurring.

2. Protecting The Sheathing

Water can easily go through the joints in metal panels, which can be corrugated, crimped, or modular panels. An effective way to prevent leaks is by applying waterproofing and high-temperature underlayment to your entire roof deck. This item can also wrap around all fasteners. Alternatively, you can use an electric seamer to crim the metal panels’ edges.

man sealing metal roof sheet with power drillYou can also help your metal roof contract and expand freely by laying slip sheets (e.g., rosin paper) between the underlayment and the roof. According to McElroy Metal, self-adhered, asphalt-backed underlayments must be installed within a specific temperature range: 40℉ and 125℉. Additionally, synthetic underlayments can be exposed between 3 and 6 months.

3. Choosing A Strong Substrate

Another key component of metal roof installation is the substrate, which is the material utilized to cover the joists and rafters. This is generally Oriented Strand Board (OSB) or plywood and is applied to the top of a roof.

4. Choosing The Proper Sealant

Finally, be sure to choose an effective sealant or adhesive. If you notice silicone tubes, this is a problem because they aren’t durable. On the other hand, polyurethane-based sealants are designed to effectively stick to (and flex with) metal. Once the metal panels and strips are installed, the ridge cap can be installed on your roof as well.

5. Hire An Experienced Roofing Contractor

Remember that an experienced roofing contractor can help you choose the best type of metal roof given your home’s construction type and your budget. A roofing contractor should also know what types of materials and tools to use, how to properly measure your roof’s dimensions to know how much metal to use, and what your local area’s building codes are (these typically determine whether a full roof replacement is needed).

Of course, you will likely enjoy lower installation costs if there is little repair or demolition needed for your roofing project. Additionally, keep in mind that your contractor will need relatively easy access to a power outlet for their tools (if possible, consider using a generator). It’s also a good idea to keep a dumpster and storage area near the installation site.

How Long Does Siding Take To Install?

construction worker installing sidingA home’s siding is one of its most evident characteristics (aside from its doors, windows, roof, and gutters) and is typically something that takes significant time and effort to install. From planning to completion, there are several moving parts to siding installation and issues (some of which are unforeseen) that can arise during this process. Here is a close look at how long it takes to install siding.

Siding Installation Timeline

According to Modernize®, it normally takes between 10 and 14 days to install siding on a new house. However, the time frame for this type of project can often vary depending on factors such as your home’s style and size and whether your siding needs painting. The total timeline for siding installation includes the process of removing your current siding, prep, insulation additions, replacing your siding, and any touch-ups, such as trim work.

Considerations That Can Affect Siding Installation

Several issues can affect the timeline of your siding installation, including:

Wood Rot

Wood rot is a classic example of the type of issue that isn’t discovered until you remove your siding. This occurrence can delay your installation for days at a time, depending on the level of rot and the materials you have available to repair the issue.

Toxic Substances

Many homes built before 1979 often contain a host of toxic substances such as asbestos, which is fire-retardant, and lead paint, which can also harm both your home’s interior and exterior. If you or anyone else associated with your property notices these materials (following an inspection or on your own), be sure to alert your siding contractor immediately so that you can efficiently get rid of them.

Damaged Sheathing

Damaged sheathing is also a common issue many homeowners encounter upon removing their siding. It often takes time to repair ruined sheathing, so be sure to hire an experienced contractor. There are several things you can do to repair exterior sheathing rot, including using a good caulk and taping the joints.

Weather Events

Inclement weather such as heavy rain (that leads to flooding), hail, and wind can also impact the timeline of your siding installation. If you live in an area where these types of events are common, be sure to routinely monitor the weather so that you can choose a day with clear skies to have your new siding installed.

Pest Infestations

exterminator killing cocroachesMany homes can also unfortunately become infested with pests such as rats and insects. If this is the case with your house, be sure to respond promptly and hire an exterminator (or fumigate your home). Pests can easily linger in your gutters, which are generally connected to the siding. Thus, your siding installation can be impacted by these animals.

What Can I Do To Prepare My House For New Siding?

There are many things you can do to ensure that your siding installation goes smoothly, such as:

  • Ask your contractor how new siding can impact your downspouts and shutters and whether these must be removed.
  • Move objects such as potted plants, outdoor furniture, and garden/lawn care equipment away from your home and trim all shrubs and trees.
  • Mow your lawn so that it’s as short as possible just before your new siding is installed. This can help contractors more easily recover loose staples or nails.
  • Siding installation is often a loud process. Therefore, try to keep yourself and your family out of the house on this day if possible. If your pets and children must stay home for whatever reason, be sure to monitor them as much as possible and ask the installation crew to be careful around them.
  • Provide your contractor with at least one functioning power outlet.
  • Park your cars far away enough from your home to minimize the possibility of damage.
  • Place a dumpster near your house to throw out debris (you may need a permit for this depending on your homeowner’s association or municipality).

All of these precautions can help make the siding installation process significantly smoother, so be sure to take them, regardless of the type of home you own or the material you want for your siding (fiber cement, vinyl, metal, wood, etc.). Make sure to also maintain clear and effective communication with your siding contractors to avoid costly mistakes and you’ll soon have brand new siding that will make your house stand out more than you could have ever imagined.

roof extension during renovation work

February 7, 2022

8 Roof Extension Ideas For 2022

a home going through a roof extension projectA roof extension can help make your home look more stylish and unique while also providing functionality. However, it’s important to think about how this additional space will impact both your house’s exterior and interior. Therefore, you should always make sure to establish your goals and budget before undertaking this type of project, regardless of the size, color, number of floors, types of windows, and construction material of your home.

8 Roof Extension Ideas

As we begin a new year, there are several roof design ideas you can consider to make your house stand out. Here are eight roof extension ideas for 2022:

1. Catslide Roof (Aesthetic Extension)

catslide roof renovation on a homeThis design consists of a roof slope that extends downwards further than a second slope. A catslide roof is an excellent option if you own a cottage, as the tiles and shape can give your home a beautiful aesthetic. This type of roof can also match older parts of your home.

2. Winged Roof

As its name suggests, this type of roof is shaped like wings and is an excellent design choice for a modern home that has a lot of windows and vibrant colors. This extension generally goes out (upwards) and down (on the side of the house) and gives off an almost artistic feel, as if it were a sculpture. As with any other roof, just make sure that the color fits well with the rest of your property.

3. Unique Twisted Roof

A twisted roof is a sound design choice if you have a two-story home with a staircase of a certain height and windows that are installed in a specific way. Therefore, it’s both an aesthetically unique and pragmatic option for a roof. A twisted roof can also be appreciated from several angles.

4. Metal Roof (Single-Story Extension)

black metal rood installed in a single story homeA metal (e.g. stainless steel or copper) roof on a single-story extension can look aesthetically pleasing opposite aluminum windows and composite wood, or even stone. This is especially true of older homes, so be sure to consider this side extension if your house was built many decades ago.

According to State Farm® Insurance, metal roofs have great longevity: they can last between 40 and 70 years, depending on the specific type of metal. By contrast, traditional asphalt roofs typically last no more than 20 years. Some figures show the average cost of a single-story roof extension can be anywhere between $1,350 and $2,100 per square-meter, depending on your chosen materials and design type.

5. Duo Pitch Roof (Modern Extension)

A duo pitch roof is also an excellent choice for cottages. This type of extension, which will give your home a contemporary look, can feature steel and significant glazing, or it can consist of stone slates. Consider a duo pitch roof if you feel that your house is rapidly aging.

6. Monopitch Roof (Cantilevered Extension)

A monopitch roof only has one slope and typically features a single gradient. This is an excellent choice if you have a preference for simpler designs. A monopitch roof extension is also a great option if you live in the countryside, as it allows you to enjoy rural landscapes more. However, keep in mind that monopitch roofs are often expensive because of the level of engineering required to build them.

7. Flat Roof Extension

flat roof extension on the deck of a homeA flat roof extension may initially sound simple but can sometimes be the best option for a home. For example, if you have an old (e.g. 19th-century) art-deco-style home, a flat roof can mark a sharp contrast with a pitched roof, especially if it’s a dark color. Flat roofs also typically include a minor pitch for water draining.

8. Twin Gable Extension

A twin gable roof design features two triangle-shaped frontages and has the appearance of two identical (or similar) “peaks.” This is different from a crossed-gable design, which features two triangular roofs that are perpendicular to one another. A twin gable extension can look great in combination with concrete tiles, white render, and glazing. Windows are typically installed on gables so that natural light can enter a home.

All of these roof extensions can help your home stand out in 2022. Keep in mind that certain types of roofs, such as metal roofs, are more durable and eco-friendly. However, metal roofs are not as affordable as other types of roofing materials, such as asphalt and wood. They are also not as durable as clay, concrete, or slate roofing tiles, which can last 100 years or longer, according to the National Association of Home Builders®.

How To Safely Replace Asbestos Siding

old siding on roofAsbestos fibers were commonly used in siding construction between 1920 and 1980, until the negative health effects of asbestos were discovered. It is important to remove asbestos siding and replace it with a healthy and safe material to avoid symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, chest pain and tightness, respiratory complications, etc.

This review offers a step-by-step guide to replacing asbestos siding. However, to ensure the safety and efficacy of the project, it is strongly encouraged to hire a professional siding contractor.

The Process To Safely Replace Asbestos Siding

We strongly encourage hiring a professional for asbestos siding replacement as the job can be dangerous and complex. In addition, some municipalities require that you hire a professional. If you live in a municipality that does not require professional replacement of asbestos siding and you choose to do it yourself, make sure you follow the process below and have all the necessary materials and safety equipment listed.

Step 1: Gather Your Equipment, Tools And Materials

The first step is to gather everything you will need for the project. This includes safety equipment, construction tools, and your materials. Specifically, you should gather and organize:

  • Polyethylene plastic sheeting
  • Asbestos waste disposal bags
  • Liquid cleaning detergent
  • Disposable coveralls, gloves, and boots
  • Safety goggles
  • Pry bar and nail puller
  • Utility knife
  • HEPA respirator
  • Garden hose w/ spray nozzle
  • Garden pump sprayer

You may need additional materials depending on the type of siding, the age, and environmental factors. Since much of the equipment can be costly, it is often best to hire a professional who already has the asbestos siding replacement equipment necessary.

Step 2: Obtain The Proper Permit And Post Signs

man with permitYou may also need to obtain a permit depending on the area you live in. You can contact your local permit department, which can either provide you with an asbestos removal permit or direct you to the agency that can. You should also post signs around your property to let visitors and neighbors know to stay away during the duration of the asbestos removal project.

Step 3: Protect Yourself With Safety Equipment

You should make sure you protect yourself properly by wearing all of the necessary safety equipment. This, of course, includes anyone else who is assisting you or who is around the asbestos siding. Most notably, you should wear disposable clothing, gloves, boots, and safety goggles.

Step 4: Remove The Asbestos Siding

Once you are well equipped with safety equipment, the next step is to remove the asbestos siding. You can remove the siding by pulling the nails and prying each panel away one at a time. The goal is to limit how much is broken to reduce asbestos exposure. It is important to keep the siding wet with a soaking solution that includes cleaning detergent and immediately discard the siding into waste disposal bags, ensuring the siding does not touch the ground or any surfaces.

Step 5: Double-Bag Or Wrap Asbestos Containers

Polyethylene bags are recommended for disposing of the asbestos siding. It is best to double bag the asbestos siding to limit the amount of exposure. You can also use asbestos containers and wrap them as well.

Step 6: Clean Your Work Area

You should always keep yourself and the work area as clean as possible through the entire asbestos siding removal process. This should include using a pre-made cleaning solution regularly. Once the project is finished, conduct a thorough cleaning of the entire perimeter of your home.

Step 7: Remove And Dispose Of Contaminated Clothing And Equipment

It is best to dispose of any clothes that you wore while you were around the asbestos siding. Of course, you want to ensure you are not wearing any clothes that you value during the project, in addition to the disposable coveralls and other safety clothing you choose to wear. Any contaminated equipment should be disposed of as well.

Step 8: Remove The Asbestos And Debris

asbestos siding on orange houseThe last step is to remove the asbestos and the rest of the possibly contaminated debris. Find your local disposal site and be sure to clearly mark all asbestos containers. Once you are finished, be sure to take one last long shower.

Once again, given the detailed process and the dangers involved with asbestos siding removal, we strongly recommend and encourage hiring a professional siding contractor to handle the process for you.

4 Different Types Of Bay Windows

Bay windows are a great way to add style to your home and create more living space inside of your home. This review discusses the different types of bay windows that are available and the differences, as well as the pros and cons of each option.

What Are Bay Windows?

bay windows with dark backgroundBay windows are a strategically designed window style that projects outward to form a bay inside your home. They have been around for more than 500 years, and they are still as popular today as they were when they were first invented. Bay windows consist of three openings in an angled projection. This creates optimal space for an added sitting area, home decor, or for a range of other practical purposes.

What Are The Different Types Of Bay Windows?

You may have a preference for one window style rather than another, and it is beneficial to have an understanding of the different types of bay windows that you can choose between. The most notable types of bay window types are box bay, canted bay, circle bay, and oriel bay windows.

Canted Bay Windows

Canted bay windows are the most common style for bay windows; they are sometimes referred to as classic modern bay windows. They have less than a 90 degree angle, which allows for more coverage area for the window space. However, unlike circle bay windows, they have three distinct straight panels. Canted bay windows are most common for the first floor of homes, especially in living rooms, family rooms, and dens.

Box Bay Windows

Box bay windows involve a main panel that is generally larger than canted bay windows and two side window panels that are at a 90 degree angle to the primary panel, forming a box-style window area. Although box bay windows work well in any room inside your home, they are most commonly used in the kitchen, especially around the sink and counters.

Circle Bay Windows

A circle bay window is a combination between a traditional bay window and a bow window. This unique window design has large panes on each side of the bay and additional panes above the windows. This allows for a more advanced and intriguing design that is different from what you would see with canted or box bay windows, making it an appealing option to consider. Circle bay windows are most ideal for newer homes that feature a modern design.

Oriel Windows

oriel windows in blueOriel bay windows are the most traditional style of all bay window types. They were first made popular during the English Renaissance period. They usually have decorative brackets of wood, stone, or masonry that serve as a support for the windows, which are not supported by the ground. This makes oriel windows perfect for second floor window designs, especially for homeowners that desire something bolder than the typically single pane or double pane window style.

What Bay Window Type Is Best For My Home Style?

One bay window type may be a better solution for you based on the type of home you have. The following is a more detailed look at how each bay window type works based upon home style.

Modern

A common misconception is that bay windows are for older, more traditional-style homes. However, some bay window types such as circle bay windows are designed to match the style of newer homes that were built in recent decades.

Victorian

bay windows in a victorian style homeBay windows are perfect for Victorian homes, which have a more distinct and classic appearance. Specifically, we often recommend oriel windows for Victorian homes as they match the traditional style of the home well, and oriel windows work well on the second and third floors that are more common in Victorian style homes.

Mid-Century

Bay windows also work well for Mid-Century style homes (such as a ranch design). We recommend either box bay or canted bay window styles for Mid-Century style homes, although all options should work well for this home design.

Craftsman

American Craftsman style homes are not generally known for their bay windows, but adding canted bay or box bay windows is a great way to add unique appeal to your home, especially when it comes to decorating the inside of your home and creating more living space.

The Different Types Of Bay Window Configurations

beautiful home with windowsThere are also different types of bay window configurations to consider as well. Most notably, bay window panels are usually either double-hung or casement windows; a double hung window has two sashes that open up and down and a casement window opens outward.

The differences in appearance are subtle, but understanding your options and making an informed decision about which configuration is right for you is important.

I contracted Adelphia to paint my living room, dining room and a hallway. The two tradesmen arrived exactly on time on the first day and prepared the areas. They filled holes, repaired a long crack on the ceiling and two on one of the walls then painted the ceiling. They came back on time the next day to add a second coat of paint on the ceilings and to paint the walls and trim. The painters were courteous, polite and worked hard with just a short lunch break both days. Their clean up was excellent and the job was outstanding. This is the second time we have hired Adelphia, and in both instances my wife and I were very pleased. I would not hesitate in recommending them.read more

We hired Adelphia Exteriors for our Exterior Painting Project and we are very happy with the finished product. Rob provided the estimate within one business day. Viki promptly and kindly helped us to schedule the start date after our project was delayed because of weather. Nick visited the job site to make sure all the exterior colors accurately matched the existing colors. Nick made sure all the areas that required maintenance painting were carefully addressed. He even replaced our house numbers which was a way better option than painting them. He also meticulously worked with Diego to reinstall two shutters that were already partially detached. Diego and his painting team did an amazing job painting all our exterior brick, porch, garage frame and metal light fixtures. They were very detailed in their painting services and professional. Again, we are very pleased with the results.read more

From our initial consultation with Rob until the job was completed, our experience with Adelphia Exteriors was great! Rob was very easy to talk to, made sure we understood all our options and answered all our questions. There was absolutely ZERO pressure and no attempt to upsell us on anything. The install of our 19 windows was done in one day, the crew was on time and did a great job. We couldn't be happier with the windows and would recommend Adelphia without hesitation.read more

They were wonderful. Prior to signing up with them, we met with multiple other companies who tried to hard sell us into signing the same day to receive a discount. When George walked into my house I immediately told him we would not be signing on day one, and he laughed and said no problem! He was so agreeable and so easy to work with and the fact that he comes from a family business, I just had a good feeling about them. Not once did he try to hard sell us and pressure us to close, he gave us plenty of time to ask lots of questions and visit a show room in order for us to make our decision. They just finished installing some amazing windows, approximately 25, and a brand new front door. We are absolutely thrilled with the product and the quality of their installation and cleanup. They are a good company to work with! And I would not hesitate to use them again!read more

This company is great! I had quotes by three different companies to replace windows, paint our brick, install new siding, install new doors, install new gutters/down spouts, plus add new insulation! Adelphia was the only company I contacted for an estimate that would take care of all my needs with one contract. This is a family owned company that has been extremely responsive throughout the entire process. Our initial appointment was with George, who wrote the estimate, the contract, and was our main point of contact; Vickie (mom) runs the office and frequently coordinated with me by phone; and Nick (dad) founded the business in the 1980s and oversaw the painting. The painting is second to none. multiple coats with the highest quality materials looks beautiful! Next came the exterior siding. We wanted to replace our original siding and decided to change it to vinyl shake! You can see the results in the before and after photos. We are thrilled with the results! The replacement doors and windows were installed efficiently and are so beautiful. We selected Adelphia based on their competitive pricing and excellent reviews on Angie's List and Yelp. George worked with us at every step along the way to make sure we were satisfied. The contractors that Adelphia use are careful, professional, punctual, and do excellent work! The original contract included a thank you note by George that said they were determined to exceed our expectations, well, they delivered! I highly recommend Adelphia Exteriors for their value, workmanship, and personal attentiveness.read more

I would highly recommend them. We are also planing to use them to replace our windows in the future.UPDATE!!! Our windows have now been replaced and I am still just as happy with their service. We used Adelphia to replace the insulation in our attic. Due to the need to schedule the work for after a different contractor completed a repair of the ridge vent, we needed some flexibility on their part. This was handled with patience and understanding. The actual work was done very professionally (both the removal of the old damaged insulation and the installation of the new). The workers arrived on time, maintained a very clean work site and were very polite and respectful. I highly recommend this company.read more

The Adelphia team was great from start to finish when we had three windows installed in the basement. It was a bit tricky -- one competitor said they couldn't do the job. Adelphia didn't flinch at all. I'm now enjoying sitting in the basement with the windows open on 85 degree day. Choose these guys!read more

Great service and price for new windows in my home. Major renovation project and Adelphia Exteriors was only window company willing to give me a ballpark estimate with me giving estimated window sizes and them not seeing the house, so I could budget all the renovations to figure out if I could do windows. NO hard sell like other window companies. I took my time and signed the contract 1-2 months later after they gave me a firm quote. Very happy with the result.read more

We used Adelphia to replace our windows. We had a few estimates and while the VinylMax windows may not have been quite as premium as the other option we were seriously considering, the product got great reviews and Adelphia in particular was highly reviewed and left a great impression. And pricing was very competitive too. The windows arrived before predicted and installation started exactly when scheduled and wrapped up ahead of schedule. The installer did a great job of cleaning up afterwards and accommodating our tiny house that doesn't necessarily allow for all furniture to be far from windows at the same time :) Definitely would use them for other projects in the future.read more

This was our 4th project with Adelphia Exteriors. Last year they replaced all our windows; replaced the original vinyl siding; and replaced our original gutters and downspouts. This year we asked them to come back to replace our 24-year old roof shingles that had become stained and looked terrible alongside all the other new exterior features. Once again Adelphia did a wonderful job at a competitive price. They went the extra mile to make sure that we found the particular color and style of shingle that we wanted to match the siding work they the had done in 2020. Adelphia is a family-run business that is committed to making sure their customers are completely satisfied. I would highly recommend them for any of your exterior home improvement needs.read more

We just recently employed this company to install siding on our upper storey. I have to say the service and product install was outstanding. George and Tim went out of their way to make sure all details of the install were complete including cleanup, and took their time to attend to details. They stayed over to finish one large side so my family were not inconvenienced next day with the banging. Tim kept me informed of status and invited viewing of progress. George was patient and meticulous. Both were focused on doing a great job and it shows. Neighbours have also been outside to praise their work. George kept me up to date and the job moving- I knew I could rely on him if a problem occurred, but that didn’t happen. Chris has to be included too as part of the team, because his no-pressure sales pitch is why I chose the company. Thank you for the great experience with your company and work ethics of your team- it has made a huge difference to our property and I may add our lives.read more
